SO2's central S atom is sp2 hybridised (2 bonding pairs + 1 lone pair), giving it a bent/angular shape with a bond angle of about 119.5 degrees.

In SO2, the central sulphur atom is bonded to two oxygen atoms and additionally carries one lone pair of electrons. By VSEPR theory, treating each S=O bond as occupying one electron-domain, sulphur has 3 electron domains around it: 2 bonding domains (to the two O atoms) and 1 lone pair. This corresponds to sp2 hybridisation of sulphur, and the three electron domains arrange themselves in a trigonal planar electron-pair geometry to minimise repulsion.
