Step 1. VSEPR theory. (1) A molecule's shape depends on the number of valence-shell electron pairs around its central atom. (2) These pairs are of two kinds — bond pairs (shared between two atoms) and lone pairs (localised on the central atom). (3) Every pair repels every other, so all pairs arrange as far apart as possible in 3-D space to minimise repulsion. (4) The repulsion order is lone pair–lone pair > lone pair–bond pair > bond pair–bond pair, since a lone pair (tied to only one nucleus) spreads out more than a bond pair (pulled taut between two nuclei).

Step 2. Applying it to IF₇. Iodine has 7 valence electrons and forms 7 I-F bonds, with ZERO lone pairs remaining (7 electron domains, all bonding). With no lone pairs to distort the arrangement, the seven bond pairs arrange themselves at the vertices of a PENTAGONAL BIPYRAMID — the shape (per Table 10.6) for an AB₇ species with no lone pairs. …
