Ideal gases are hypothetical gases that exactly obey PV = nRT because their molecules are treated as point masses with no intermolecular attraction.

An ideal (or perfect) gas is a theoretical gas defined by these assumptions:

  1. The volume occupied by the gas molecules themselves is negligible compared to the total volume of the container.
  2. There are no intermolecular forces of attraction or repulsion between the gas molecules.
  3. Collisions between molecules (and with the container walls) are perfectly elastic, i.e. no loss of kinetic energy.
  4. The average kinetic energy of the molecules is directly proportional to the absolute temperature.

Because of these idealisations, an ideal gas obeys the combined gas equation exactly at every temperature and pressure:

PV = nRT
