Step 1. The van der Waals equation for n moles of a real gas is (P+an2V2)(V−nb)=nRT\left(P+\dfrac{an^2}{V^2}\right)(V-nb)=nRT.

Step 2. Pressure correction term (an2/V2an^2/V^2). Gas pressure comes from molecules striking the container walls. A molecule about to strike the wall is pulled back slightly by the attractive forces of its neighbours (unlike a molecule deep inside the gas, which feels balanced attraction from all sides), so it hits the wall a little less forcefully than it would with no attraction. The measured pressure P is therefore somewhat lower than the true "ideal" pressure the gas would exert with no attraction, so the correction term an2/V2an^2/V^2 (proportional to the square of density) is added to P to recover that ideal pressure. …
