Le Chatelier's principle states: "If a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change in one of the factors (concentration, pressure, volume, or temperature) that determines the state of equilibrium, the system will adjust itself (shift) in such a way as to counteract, as far as possible, the effect of that change, and a new equilibrium is established."
For example:
- Increasing the concentration of a reactant shifts the equilibrium forward (towards products) to consume some of the added reactant.
- Increasing pressure (decreasing volume) on a gaseous equilibrium shifts it towards the side with fewer moles of gas.
- Increasing temperature shifts an equilibrium in the endothermic direction (absorbing the added heat). …
