Henri Le Chatelier's principle states: "If a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change in concentration, pressure, volume, or temperature, the equilibrium shifts in the direction that tends to counteract the effect of the change."
Applications:
- Increasing the concentration of a reactant shifts equilibrium towards the products (to consume the extra reactant).
- Increasing pressure (decreasing volume) on a gaseous equilibrium shifts it towards the side with fewer moles of gas.
- Increasing temperature shifts an equilibrium in the endothermic direction (which absorbs the extra heat); decreasing temperature shifts it in the exothermic direction. …
