Exercise 6.2 · Q14

Q.A family is using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) of weight 14.214.2 kg for consumption (the full cylinder weighs 29.529.5 kg, which includes the empty cylinder's tare weight of 15.315.3 kg). Used at a constant rate, it lasts for 2424 days, after which the cylinder is replaced by a new one.

(i) Find the equation relating the quantity of gas in the cylinder to the number of days.
(ii) Describe the graph for the first 9696 days.

Model gas remaining as a linear function of days for one 2424-day cylinder, then extend the picture to 9696 days by repeating that segment once per new cylinder.

Let x=x= number of days used, y=y= quantity of gas remaining in the cylinder (kg). The cylinder starts full with 14.214.2 kg of usable gas and is used at a constant rate until empty at day 2424.

Step 1. Part (i) — identify two points. At x=0x=0, y=14.2y=14.2 (full cylinder); at x=24x=24, y=0y=0 (empty, about to be replaced). These are the two points of the line for 0≤x≤240\le x\le24.

Step 2. Find the slope.

m=0−14.224−0=−14.224=−142240=−71120m=\frac{0-14.2}{24-0}=-\frac{14.2}{24}=-\frac{142}{240}=-\frac{71}{120}

Step 3. Write the equation (point-slope through (0,14.2)(0,14.2)).

y−14.2=−71120(x−0)  ⇒  y=−71120x+14.2,0≤x≤24y-14.2=-\frac{71}{120}(x-0) \;\Rightarrow\; y=-\frac{71}{120}x+14.2,\qquad 0\le x\le24 …
