EVALUATION
This Evaluation section closes the unit with four kinds of graded practice, mirroring the exact structure printed in the textbook: Part I gathers fifteen multiple choice questions (each with four options) spanning every topic of the unit, from tuning forks and beats through transverse-wave speed, resonance in closed pipes, and Doppler-shifted swings, together with the book's own printed answer key. Part II gathers fifteen short answer questions requiring brief conceptual definitions and explanations -- covering the basic vocabulary of waves, interference, beats, intensity and loudness, the Doppler effect (including redshift and blueshift), end correction, sketching simple travelling-wave functions, the factors affecting the speed of sound in gases, and the echo. Part III gathers sixteen long answer questions requiring full derivations and detailed explanations -- covering the formation of ripples, the distinction between travelling and stationary waves, the string wave-speed derivation, Newton's formula and Laplace's correction, reflection of sound, the superposition principle and interference, the formation of beats, stationary waves and their characteristics, the laws of transverse vibration, fundamental frequency/harmonics/overtones, the sonometer's construction and working, intensity and loudness, overtones in closed and open organ pipes, the resonance air column method for measuring the speed of sound, and a full case-by-case discussion of the Doppler effect. Part IV gathers nine numerical exercises applying the chapter's formulas to concrete physical situations -- wave speed and wavelength, the speed of sound in a gas mixture, SONAR de …
