Q.A police car with a siren, moving with a velocity 20 m s−1^{-1}, chases a thief who is moving in a car with a velocity v0v_0 m s−1^{-1}. The police car sounds its siren at frequency 300 Hz, and both cars are moving towards a stationary siren of frequency 400 Hz. Calculate the speed at which the thief is moving. (Assume the thief does not observe any beat.)

Step 1. The thief, moving at unknown speed v0v_0 toward the fixed stationary siren of frequency 400 Hz, hears that siren's Doppler-shifted frequency as a moving listener approaching a stationary source: f1′=400(v+v0v)f_1'=400\left(\dfrac{v+v_0}{v}\right) (row 1 of Table 11.4).

Step 2. The thief also hears the police car's own siren (source frequency 300 Hz); since the police car (source) is chasing the thief (listener) from behind at 20 m/s, this uses the "S chases L" formula of Table 11.4: f2′=300(v−v0v−20)f_2'=300\left(\dfrac{v-v_0}{v-20}\right).

Step 3. "The thief does not observe any beat" means these two frequencies the thief hears are perceived as the same, so f1′=f2′f_1'=f_2'. …
