Step 1. The principle of superposition states that when two or more waves overlap at a point in a medium, the resultant (net) displacement at that point and instant is simply the algebraic (or vector, in higher dimensions) sum of the displacements each wave would have produced there individually, y=y1+y2y=y_1+y_2 (generalising to y=∑Ciyiy=\sum C_i y_i for n waves).

Step 2. This holds because the wave equation is linear, so any linear combination of its solutions is itself also a solution -- waves obeying this (typically of small amplitude relative to wavelength) are called linear waves.
