Besides filtering blood, the kidney also acts as an endocrine gland, producing Erythropoietin (stimulates red blood cell formation), Renin (regulates blood pressure via the RAAS), and the active form of Vitamin D (aids calcium absorption) — plus prostaglandins.

While the kidney's primary role is excretory (filtering blood and forming urine), it also functions as an endocrine organ, secreting several important hormones/hormone precursors:

  1. Erythropoietin (EPO): secreted by specialised cells in the kidney in response to low blood oxygen levels (hypoxia), erythropoietin stimulates the bone marrow to increase the production of red blood cells (erythropoiesis), helping restore adequate oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
  2. Renin: released by the juxtaglomerular cells of the kidney when blood pressure or blood volume falls (or Na+ levels drop). Renin initiates the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) — it converts angiotensinogen to angiotensin I, which is later converted to angiotensin II, ultimately triggering aldosterone release, vasoconstriction, and a rise in blood pressure/blood volume. …
