Antidiuretic hormone (ADH), released from the posterior pituitary, increases water reabsorption in the kidney tubules and so concentrates the urine.

ADH is synthesised by neurosecretory cells of the hypothalamus and stored/released from the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis). It is secreted in response to a rise in blood osmolarity (dehydration) or a fall in blood volume/pressure, detected by osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus.

ADH acts mainly on the distal convoluted tubule (DCT) and collecting duct, making their walls more permeable to water by inserting aquaporin water channels into the tubular cell membranes. This allows more water to be reabsorbed back into the blood, reducing urine volume and concentrating it (antidiuresis).
