Schizocoelom forms by the splitting of solid mesodermal blocks in protostome animals, while enterocoelom forms by pouching-out of the embryonic gut wall in deuterostome animals.

The method by which the coelom (the fluid-filled body cavity lined by mesoderm) develops in the embryo is an important criterion for classifying triploblastic (coelomate) animals. In schizocoelous development, seen in protostome animals (such as annelids, arthropods, and molluscs), the mesoderm initially develops as solid blocks or bands of cells arising from special mesodermal cells; a cavity later forms by the splitting (schizo- = split) of this solid mesoderm, creating the coelom, which is therefore said to be schizocoelomic. In enterocoelous development, seen in deuterostome animals (such as echinoderms, hemichordates, and chordates), the mesoderm instead arises as pouches that bud off (evaginate) from the wall of the embryonic gut (archenteron); these pouches pinch off and their cavities become the coelom, which is therefore said to be enterocoelomic (entero- = related to the gut). Besides this developmental difference, protostomes (schizocoelomates) typically show spiral, det …
