Circulatory System

Lampito mauritii has a closed type of blood vascular system, meaning the blood always travels inside distinct vessels rather than pooling freely in body cavities. Two principal longitudinal vessels, the dorsal vessel and the ventral vessel, run the length of the body above and below the alimentary canal. The dorsal vessel carries paired valves that stop blood flowing backward and collects blood from the various organs, while the non-contractile, valveless ventral vessel distributes blood outward to the organs. In the front third of the body, eight pairs of commissural vessels - the lateral or "pseudo" hearts, lying in segments 6 to 13 - connect the dorsal and ventral vessels and actively pump blood from the dorsal to the ventral side.
