Domain Archaea comprises ancient, unicellular prokaryotic organisms that are biochemically distinct from Bacteria and often thrive in extreme environments.

In the three-domain system of classification proposed by Carl Woese, all living organisms are grouped into three domains: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. Archaea are prokaryotic (lacking a membrane-bound nucleus), like bacteria, but they differ from true bacteria in several fundamental ways: their cell walls lack peptidoglycan (a molecule characteristic of bacterial cell walls), their cell membranes contain unique branched-chain lipids joined by ether linkages (rather than the ester-linked lipids of bacteria and eukaryotes), and their ribosomal RNA sequences and certain other molecular features are distinct enough to place them in their own domain, more closely related in some respects to Eukarya than to Bacteria. Archaea are especially well known for including many extremophiles, organisms adapted to survive in harsh conditions: halophiles thrive in extremely salty environments such as salt pans and salt lakes; thermoacidophiles live in hot, acidic environments such as hot springs and volcanic areas; and methanogens live in anaerobic environments such as marshy/waterlogged soil and the gut of ruminant animals, where they produ …
