Grafting unites two separate plants into one; layering roots a still-attached stem before it is separated from the parent.

Grafting is a method of artificial vegetative propagation in which parts of two different, but usually related, plants are joined so that they grow together as a single, composite plant. The upper part, called the scion, is chosen for its desirable qualities such as fruit or flower type, while the lower part, the rootstock (or stock), is usually a vigorous, disease-resistant, or otherwise hardy already-rooted plant. The cut surfaces of the scion and rootstock are aligned so that their vascular cambium layers are in contact, and the union is bound and sealed until the tissues fuse and vascular continuity is established. Grafting is widely used in fruit trees such as mango and citrus, and in ornamentals such as rose, to combine the fruiting/flowering quality of the scion with the hardiness of the rootstock.
