(a) Characteristic features of entomophilous flowers
Entomophilous flowers are those pollinated by insects, and they show a suite of adaptations to attract and make effective use of insect visitors:
- Large, brightly coloured petals/corolla -- to visually attract insects from a distance.
- Fragrance -- many entomophilous flowers are scented, which helps guide insects to the flower.
- Nectar -- most produce nectar in nectaries as a food reward that draws insects to visit repeatedly.
- Pollen texture -- the pollen grains are typically sticky, spiny, or rough-surfaced, which helps them adhere to the insect's body as it moves among flowers, unlike the smooth, light, wind-borne pollen of anemophilous flowers.
- Nectar guides/landing platforms -- many flowers have special markings or structural platforms that direct the visiting insect toward the nectar and, in doing so, bring it into contact with the anthers and stigma.
- Positioning of anthers and stigma -- arranged such that a visiting insect inevitably brushes against them while accessing the nectar, ensuring pollen transfer.
- Specific timing -- some flowers open at particular times of day that coincide with the activity period of their specific pollinators.
- Specialised structural adaptations -- some flowers (e.g. papilionaceous/pea-type flowers) show highly specific structural modifications suited to a particular pollinator, such as bees.
(b) Afforestation with case studies
Afforestation is the deliberate establishment of forest/tree cover on land that did not previously carry forest, or that has been deforested, with the aim of restoring green cover, preventing soil erosion and desertification, and providing ecological and economic benefits.
