The three main methods of artificial selection used in plant breeding are:
- Mass selection
- Pure-line selection
- Clonal selection
Explaining mass selection: In this method, plant breeders visually examine a genetically heterogeneous (mixed) population of a crop and select a number of individual plants that show desirable characteristics (e.g. high yield, disease resistance, good grain quality) based purely on their outward appearance (phenotype). The seeds harvested from all the selected plants are then bulked (mixed) together, rather than being kept separate plant-by-plant, and sown together to raise the next generation. This process of selecting superior-looking plants and bulking their seed is repeated over several generations. Because no individual progeny testing or record-keeping is done, mass selection is a relatively simple and inexpensive method, and it is used mainly to improve the overall (average) performance of the population for simply inherited traits, rather than to iso …
