Seed treatment protects seeds from disease and pests, improves germination and seedling vigour, boosts early nutrient uptake, and extends seed storage life.

Working

Seed treatment is the practice of applying a protective chemical (fungicide, insecticide) or biological agent (a biofertilizer/biocontrol organism, such as Rhizobium, Azospirillum, or Trichoderma) to seeds before they are sown. It offers several important benefits in crop production:

  1. Protection from disease: treated seed is protected from seed-borne and soil-borne fungal and bacterial pathogens (such as those causing damping-off of seedlings), which improves the overall germination percentage of the sown seed.
  2. Protection from pests: insecticidal seed treatment protects the germinating seed and young seedling from soil-dwelling insect pests, and also protects the seed itself from storage pests before sowing.
  3. Improved germination and vigour: by reducing early disease and pest pressure, treated seed generally shows better, more uniform germination and stronger, healthier seedling establishment, giving a more uniform crop stand.
  4. Improved nutrient availability: seed treated with biofertilizers (e.g. nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium for legumes, or phosphate-solubilising bacteria) supplies beneficial microorganisms right at the root zone from the start, boosting early nutrient uptake and plant growth. …
