Step 1. Gravitational force. A universal attractive force acting between any two masses; though the weakest of the four forces at the particle scale, it always adds up and dominates at astronomical distances - it is what keeps the planets, including Earth, in orbit around the Sun, and what keeps us bound to the Earth's surface.

Step 2. Electromagnetic force. Acts between electric charges (and, via moving charges, magnetic sources); it governs almost all everyday physical and chemical phenomena, and specifically it is the electromagnetic repulsion between the atoms of our feet and the atoms of the ground that lets us physically stand on the Earth's surface.

Step 3. Strong nuclear force. A short-range but, within that range, extremely powerful attractive force acting between nucleons; it is exactly what holds the nucleus together against the fierce electrostatic repulsion among its protons, and is therefore what keeps the atoms of our own bodies stable. …
