X-rays, being highly penetrating and differentially absorbed by tissues of different density/atomic number, are used in medicine mainly for diagnostic imaging and for therapeutic destruction of diseased tissue.

Why X-rays are useful in medicine

X-rays are electromagnetic waves of very short wavelength (of the order of 10−10 m10^{-10}\,m) and correspondingly high photon energy. They penetrate soft tissue easily but are absorbed strongly by materials of higher atomic number and density, such as the calcium in bone. This differential absorption is what produces a usable image when X-rays are passed through the body onto a photographic plate or a digital detector — dense structures cast darker (more absorbing) shadows than soft tissue.

Three medical applications

  1. Radiography (diagnostic imaging of bones): A patient is placed between an X-ray source and a photographic plate. Bones absorb far more X-rays than the surrounding muscle and skin, so they appear as sharp shadows. This is the standard method for detecting fractures, dislocations, and swallowed or embedded foreign objects. …
