When light falls on a photosensitive metal in a photocell, ejected photoelectrons travel to the collector plate, constituting a photocurrent. If the collector is made increasingly negative relative to the emitter (a retarding potential), the photocurrent decreases, as slower electrons are turned back before reaching the collector.
