Q.A spark plug in a bike or a car is used to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the engine. It consists of two electrodes separated by a gap of around 0.6 mm0.6\ \text{mm}, as shown in the figure. To create the spark, an electric field of magnitude 3×106 V m−13\times10^6\ \text{V m}^{-1} is required.

(a) What potential difference must be applied to produce the spark?
(b) If the gap is increased, does the required potential difference increase, decrease, or remain the same?
(c) Find the potential difference if the gap is 1 mm1\ \text{mm}.

Step 1. (a) V=E×d=3×106×0.6×10−3=1800 VV=E\times d=3\times10^6\times0.6\times10^{-3}=1800\ \text{V}.

Step 2. (b) Since V=EdV=Ed with EE fixed at the breakdown value needed for a spark, increasing the gap dd requires a proportionally larger VV to still reach that same breakdown field -- so the required potential difference increases. …
