An intrinsic semiconductor is a semiconductor in its pure form, with electron–hole pairs generated solely by thermal energy, so that the electron and hole concentrations are equal; silicon and germanium are the standard examples.

Definition

A semiconductor that is chemically pure, i.e., contains no deliberately added impurity (doping) atoms, is called an intrinsic semiconductor. At absolute zero temperature (T=0 KT=0\,K), the valence band of such a crystal is completely full and the conduction band completely empty, so it behaves like a perfect insulator — there are no free charge carriers.

Behaviour at room temperature

At temperatures above 0 K, thermal energy is sufficient to break a small number of covalent bonds, exciting some valence electrons across the energy gap into the conduction band. Each electron that is excited leaves behind a vacancy (hole) in the valence band. Thus electron–hole pairs are always created in equal numbers, and
