Step 1. Define somatic cell gene therapy: therapeutic genes are transferred into somatic (body) cells — for example bone marrow cells, blood cells or skin cells — to correct a genetic disease in that individual patient. Step 2. Define germ line gene therapy: therapeutic genes are instead transferred into the germ cells — eggs and sperm — meaning the correction is built into the reproductive cells that will form the next generation. Step 3.
