The Red Data Book (Red List) is compiled and periodically updated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It documents species that are at risk of extinction, recording details such as geographic distribution, population trends, habitat, and the specific threats (habitat loss, hunting, pollution, climate change etc.) each species faces. Species are placed into threat categories — such as Extinct (EX), Extinct in the Wild (EW), Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near Threatened (NT) and Least Concern (LC) — based on standardised criteria.
