(a) Biodiversity conservation strategies fall into in-situ methods (protecting species within their natural habitat) and ex-situ methods (conserving species outside it), backed by legislation and public awareness. (b) Sewage treatment proceeds through primary (physical) and secondary (biological, aerobic then anaerobic) stages that progressively remove solids and organic pollutants before the treated water is released.

(a) Conservation of biodiversity is broadly carried out through two complementary general strategies. In-situ conservation protects species within their own natural habitat/ecosystem, allowing them to continue their natural ecological interactions and evolutionary processes; this is achieved by establishing legally protected areas such as national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and biosphere reserves (which additionally protect entire landscapes/ecosystems including buffer and transition zones for sustainable use), as well as recognising community-conserved sacred groves and identifying and prioritising biodiversity hotspots for special protection. Ex-situ conservation, by contrast, conserves species (or their genetic material) outside their natural habitat, which is especially important for critically endangered species or when the natural habitat itself is severely degraded; methods include maintaining living populations in zoological parks, botanical gardens and wildlife safari parks; long-term storage of seeds in seed banks and of genetic material (semen, ova, embryos, tissue) via cryopreservation in gene banks; and propagation of endangered plants through tissue culture. These direct conservation approaches are reinforced by wildlife protection legislation (laws restricting hunting, trade and habitat destruction), captive-breeding and reintroduction programmes to restore wild populations, and public education/awareness campaigns to build support for conservation.
