Parts (as labelled in a diagram):
- Head: flattened, oval-shaped; contains a haploid nucleus with highly condensed chromatin. The anterior two-thirds of the head is covered by the acrosome, a cap-like structure (derived from the Golgi apparatus) filled with hydrolytic/proteolytic enzymes that help the sperm penetrate the zona pellucida of the ovum during fertilisation.
- Neck: a short connecting region containing the centrioles (proximal and distal), from which the axial filament of the tail originates.
- Middle piece: contains a spirally arranged sheath of mitochondria wound around the axial filament (axoneme); these mitochondria generate the ATP required for the vigorous movement of the tail. …
