The human spermatozoan is a highly specialised motile cell with four labelled regions — head, neck, middle piece and tail — each structurally adapted for delivering the paternal genome and achieving fertilisation.

Since an actual drawing cannot be rendered here, the structure is described part by part exactly as it would be labelled in a diagram. (1) Head: an oval, flattened region containing a haploid nucleus with highly condensed chromatin, covered anteriorly by the acrosome, a cap-like vesicle derived from the Golgi apparatus that stores hydrolytic/proteolytic enzymes; on contact with the egg, the acrosome releases these enzymes (acrosomal reaction) to digest the egg's protective coats and allow sperm entry. (2) Neck: a short constricted region just behind the head, containing the proximal and distal centrioles, which organise the microtubules of the flagellum. (3) Middle piece: contains the axial filament (axoneme) surrounded by a helical sheath of numerous mitochondria arranged spirally; these mitochondria generate the ATP required to power flagellar movement. (4) Principal piece and end piece (together forming the tail/flagellu …
