Permanent methods suit people who have decided they do not want any more children, since — unlike every method described so far — they are not meant to be reversed. Both procedures work the same way in principle: they surgically block the tube that carries gametes, so fertilization can never occur, without touching the organs that actually produce the gametes.

Tubectomy is the female sterilisation procedure: a small portion of both fallopian tubes is cut and tied off, through a small incision in the abdomen or through the vagina. This blocks both fertilization and the passage of any egg into the uterus. …
