Because viral STIs cannot be cured and even curable bacterial/fungal/protozoan STIs need timely treatment to avoid complications, prevention carries most of the real protective weight. The chapter narrows this down to three concrete precautions: avoid sexual contact with an unknown partner or with multiple partners, since every additional or unfamiliar partner adds risk; use condoms consistently, which greatly (though not completely) reduces transmission risk for every class of STI; and, whenever there is any doubt about a possible infection, consult a doctor promptly for proper diagnosis and complete the full course of treatment rather than delaying or self-treating.
