The internal structure of a dicot root (as seen in transverse section) shows the following regions from the periphery to the centre:
1. Epiblema (Piliferous layer / Rhizodermis): The outermost single layer of thin-walled cells without cuticle and stomata; many of its cells produce unicellular root hairs for absorption of water and minerals.
2. Cortex: A broad zone of several layers of thin-walled parenchyma cells with intercellular spaces; it stores food and helps in the radial conduction of water. There is no distinct hypodermis.
3. Endodermis: The innermost layer of the cortex, a single layer of barrel-shaped cells fitting closely without spaces. Their radial and tangential walls bear band-like thickenings of suberin/lignin called Casparian strips, which regulate water movement into the stele. Thin-walled passage cells occur opposite the protoxylem.
4. Pericycle: A layer (usually single) of thin-walled parenchymatous cells just inside the endodermis; it gives rise to lateral roots and takes part in secondary growth (formation of cambium and cork cambium).
5. Vascular tissue (stele): Arranged in a radial manner — the xylem and phloem occur on separate radii, alternating with each other.
• The number of xylem strands is limited (usually 2 to 4) — the root is diarch, triarch or tetrarch (rarely polyarch, unlike monocots which are polyarch).
• The xylem is exarch — protoxylem lies towards the periphery and metaxylem towards the centre. …
