In 1665, the English scientist Robert Hooke examined a thin slice of cork using a microscope he had built himself. He observed that the cork was made up of many small, empty, box-like compartments arranged in rows, which reminded him of the small rooms occupied by monks in a monastery — so he named these compartments "cells," a term that has remained in biology ever since.
