The mature embryo sac is 7-celled, 8-nucleate: egg apparatus (egg + 2 synergids) at the micropylar pole, 3 antipodals at the chalazal pole, and a central cell with 2 polar nuclei. Synergids guide the pollen tube and help in fertilization.

The mature embryo sac (female gametophyte) develops from the functional megaspore by three free-nuclear mitotic divisions producing 8 nuclei, which then organise into 7 cells (this is the monosporic, 8-nucleate, Polygonum type).

Parts of the mature embryo sac:

1. Egg apparatus (at the micropylar end): Consists of three cells — one egg cell (oosphere) in the middle and two synergids on either side. The synergids bear special cellular thickenings at their micropylar tips called the filiform apparatus.

2. Antipodal cells (at the chalazal end): Three antipodal cells, which are usually vegetative and degenerate later.

3. Central cell: A large cell occupying most of the embryo sac, containing two polar nuclei (which may fuse to form a diploid secondary/definitive nucleus).

Thus the mature embryo sac has 7 cells and 8 nuclei (the central cell has two nuclei).

A labelled diagram would show: an oval embryo sac with the micropylar end at top — egg cell flanked by two synergids (with filiform apparatus); a large central cell with two polar nuclei in the middle; and three antipodal cells at the chalazal end (bottom); surrounded by the nucellus and integuments with the micropyle labelled.
