The mature embryo sac is 7-celled, 8-nucleate: egg + 2 synergids (micropylar), 3 antipodals (chalazal), and a central cell with 2 polar nuclei; synergids guide the pollen tube and nourish the egg.

Mature angiosperm embryo sac (female gametophyte):

The embryo sac develops inside the nucellus of the ovule from the functional megaspore, which undergoes three successive free-nuclear mitotic divisions to give eight nuclei. These get organised into a 7-celled, 8-nucleate structure (the typical Polygonum type). Its parts are:

1. Egg apparatus (at the micropylar end) - consists of three cells:

  • One egg cell (oosphere): the female gamete; large, pear-shaped, with the nucleus towards the chalazal end. It fuses with a male gamete to form the zygote.
  • Two synergids: flanking the egg; they possess a special thickening at the micropylar tip called the filiform apparatus, which secretes chemical substances that attract and guide the pollen tube into the embryo sac. Synergids also nourish the egg.

2. Central cell (in the centre) - the large cell occupying most of the embryo sac; it contains two polar nuclei which usually fuse to form the diploid secondary (definitive) nucleus. During double fertilisation the second male gamete fuses with it to form the triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN).

3. Antipodal cells (at the chalazal end) - three cells of nutritive function; they usually degenerate after fertilisation.

So the count is: 1 egg + 2 synergids + 3 antipodals + 1 central cell (with 2 polar nuclei) = 7 cells and 8 nuclei.
