A microsporangium has four wall layers around the sporogenous tissue - epidermis, endothecium, middle layers and tapetum - which protect, help in dehiscence, and nourish the developing pollen.

(Diagram: draw a circular microsporangium in transverse section; show the central sporogenous tissue (pollen mother cells) and, around it, four concentric wall layers labelled from outside inward as Epidermis, Endothecium, Middle layers, and Tapetum.)

Structure and wall layers of a microsporangium:

  • A microsporangium appears circular in outline in a transverse section. In the young stage it is surrounded by four wall layers and encloses a central homogeneous sporogenous tissue.

  1. Epidermis:
  • The outermost, single layer of protective cells; it protects the sporangium.

  1. Endothecium:
  • The layer just below the epidermis.

  • Its cells develop fibrous (band-like) thickenings; on drying, these help in the DEHISCENCE (splitting) of the anther to release the pollen grains.

  1. Middle layers:
  • One to three layers of cells lying below the endothecium.

  • They are usually short-lived and get crushed and absorbed as the anther matures.

  1. Tapetum: …
