Step 1: Compare atomic size

Potassium lies below sodium in Group 1, so it has a larger atomic radius (an extra electron shell) and its valence electron is farther from the nucleus.

Step 2: Compare ionisation enthalpy

Because the valence electron in K is farther away and more shielded by inner shells, it is held less firmly. This makes potassium's first ionisation enthalpy lower than sodium's.
