Friction is reduced by polishing, lubrication, using ball/roller bearings, streamlining, and air cushioning - all of which reduce direct contact between the rubbing surfaces.

Friction wastes mechanical energy as heat and causes wear and tear of machine parts, so it is often necessary to reduce it. The common methods used to decrease friction are:

  1. Polishing: Rough surfaces have tiny projections that interlock. Polishing makes surfaces smoother, reducing this interlocking and hence the friction.

  2. Lubrication: Applying oil, grease or graphite between surfaces fills the tiny gaps and forms a thin film, so the surfaces slide over the lubricant instead of rubbing directly. This greatly reduces friction.

  3. Using ball bearings and roller bearings: Rolling friction is much smaller than sliding friction. Bearings convert sliding contact into rolling contact in wheels, axles and shafts, reducing friction.
