Friction is essential for walking, gripping and braking, but it also wastes energy as heat and causes wear of machine parts.

Friction is the force that opposes relative motion between two surfaces in contact. It has both useful and harmful effects.

Advantages of friction:

  1. It enables us to walk on the ground without slipping (grip between feet and floor).
  2. Vehicles can move and be stopped - tyre-road friction provides traction, and brakes work by friction.
  3. It allows us to hold objects, write with a pen, tie knots and light a matchstick.
  4. Belts can drive pulleys and machines because of friction; nails and screws hold because of friction.
  5. Friction between soil particles helps prevent soil erosion.

Disadvantages of friction:

  1. It wastes energy by converting useful mechanical energy into heat, reducing the efficiency of machines.
  2. It causes wear and tear of moving parts (bearings, gears, tyres, machine components). …
