Water is densest at 4 degrees C (anomalous expansion). So in winter the coldest water and ice float on top while 4 degrees C water stays at the bottom; the surface ice insulates the water below, letting aquatic animals survive in the unfrozen water beneath.

Water shows anomalous (unusual) expansion: as it is cooled from a higher temperature down towards 0 degrees C, it contracts only until 4 degrees C, and below 4 degrees C it actually expands. This means water has its maximum density at 4 degrees C.

How this helps aquatic animals in cold weather:

  • As a pond or lake cools in winter, the water at the surface cools first. This cooler, denser water sinks to the bottom, and warmer water rises. This continues until the whole lake reaches 4 degrees C.
  • On further cooling, the surface water below 4 degrees C becomes less dense (because of anomalous expansion), so it does not sink - it stays at the top. When it reaches 0 degrees C, it freezes into ice, which is even less dense and floats on the surface.
  • Thus a layer of ice forms only at the top, while the water below remains liquid, with the warmest water (at 4 degrees C) at the very bottom. …
