Compared with aquatic systems, terrestrial ecosystems experience much greater fluctuation in temperature and water availability — daily and seasonal temperature swings are far larger on land than in a large body of water, and water availability can vary from abundant (rainforest) to scarce (desert) across different terrestrial biomes.
