The nutrient surplus triggers explosive growth of algae and cyanobacteria at the water surface, known as an algal bloom. When this bloom eventually dies off, its decomposition by bacteria consumes large amounts of dissolved oxygen from the water. The resulting sharp drop in dissolved oxygen suffocates fish and other aquatic organisms, while the bloom itself, while alive, can also block sunlight from reaching submerged plants below, further destabilising the ecosystem's photosynthetic base. …
