Q.What is a food web?

Two types of food chains exist: the grazing food chain (starts from green plants) and the detritus food chain (starts from dead organic matter); both are linked in an ecosystem.

A food chain is the sequence of organisms through which energy and nutrients pass, one feeding upon the other. Two main types exist in an ecosystem:

1. Grazing Food Chain (GFC):

• It BEGINS with green plants (PRODUCERS / autotrophs), which capture solar energy.

• Energy then flows to herbivores (primary consumers), then to carnivores (secondary and tertiary consumers).

• Example (terrestrial): Grass to Grasshopper to Frog to Snake to Hawk.

• Example (aquatic): Phytoplankton to Zooplankton to Small fish to Large fish.

• It depends directly on solar energy captured by the producers.

2. Detritus Food Chain (DFC):

• It BEGINS with DEAD organic matter (detritus) - dead plants, animals and their wastes.
• The detritus is fed upon by detritivores and decomposers (bacteria, fungi, earthworms, small animals), which break it down and release nutrients.
• Example: Dead leaves/litter to Earthworms and fungi to their predators (e.g. small birds).
• It depends on dead organic matter rather than directly on solar energy.

Ecosystems mainly contain two types of food chains - the grazing food chain, starting from living green plants, and the detritus food chain, starting from dead organic matter - and these are interlinked, forming a food web.

A food chain is a sequence of organisms through which food energy passes, each organism feeding on the one before it. Ecosystems typically contain two main types:

1. Grazing Food Chain (GFC):

This chain begins with living green plants (producers), which trap solar energy through photosynthesis, and proceeds through a series of consumers:

Producers (green plants) to Herbivores/Primary consumers to Carnivores/Secondary consumers to Top carnivores/Tertiary consumers.

Example: Grass to Grasshopper to Frog to Snake to Hawk.

The grazing food chain is the more commonly recognized type and forms the base of most ecosystem energy flow, dependent directly on primary production.

2. Detritus Food Chain (DFC):

This chain begins not with living producers but with dead organic matter (detritus) - such as fallen leaves, dead animal bodies, and faecal matter - which is broken down by:

Detritus to Detritivores/Decomposers (bacteria, fungi, earthworms, etc.) to their consumers.

Example: Leaf litter to Earthworm to smaller decomposer organisms/predators of earthworms.

The detritus food chain is especially important in forest ecosystems, where a large fraction of net primary production is not consumed directly by herbivores but instead falls as litter and enters the detritus pathway.

3. (Sometimes also described) Parasitic food chain: …

Interconnection: …

Food chains describe the transfer of food energy from one trophic level to the next in an ecosystem. Ecosystems contain two principal types — the grazing food chain, which begins with living producers, and the detritus food chain, which begins with dead organic matter — and these two chains are interconnected.

1. Grazing Food Chain (GFC):

• Begins with living green plants/producers, which fix solar energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis.
• Energy then passes: Producers → Primary consumers (herbivores) → Secondary consumers (carnivores that eat herbivores) → Tertiary consumers (carnivores that eat other carnivores), and so on.
• Example (terrestrial): Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Hawk.
• Example (aquatic/pond): Phytoplankton → Zooplankton → Small fish → Large fish.
• This is the more familiar, "classical" food chain, dependent directly on solar energy captured by producers.

2. Detritus Food Chain (DFC):

• Begins not with living producers but with detritus — dead organic matter such as fallen leaves, dead animal bodies, and faecal matter.
• Detritivores (e.g. earthworms, millipedes, some insect larvae, crabs) feed on and fragment this detritus, and decomposers (bacteria and fungi) break it down further, releasing nutrients back into the soil/ecosystem for reuse by producers.
• Example: Dead leaves → Detritivores (earthworms/insects) → smaller predators of the detritivores → decomposers completing breakdown.
• The DFC is especially dominant in forest ecosystems, where a large fraction of net primary production is not directly grazed but instead enters the soil as litter.

3. Relationship between GFC and DFC:

• The two chains are not isolated: dead bodies and waste from every level of the grazing food chain (dead herbivores, dead carnivores, plant litter) feed into the detritus food chain, and some detritivores/decomposer-feeders themselves become prey for grazing-chain carnivores, linking the two into a single interconnected food web. …

Ecosystems run on two interconnected types of food chains: the grazing food chain, which starts with living plants, and the detritus food chain, which starts with dead organic matter.

1. Grazing Food Chain (GFC):

This food chain begins with living green plants (producers), which fix solar energy through photosynthesis, and proceeds through a sequence of consumers:

Producers → Herbivores (primary consumers) → Primary carnivores (secondary consumers) → Secondary carnivores (tertiary consumers)

Example: Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Hawk.

The grazing food chain is the more "classical" and directly visible type of food chain and forms the base for most pyramids of numbers/biomass/energy typically studied.

2. Detritus Food Chain (DFC):

This food chain begins not with living producers but with dead organic matter (detritus) — fallen leaves, dead animal remains, faecal matter, etc. — which is broken down by decomposers and detritivores (bacteria, fungi, earthworms, and various small invertebrates).

Dead organic matter (detritus) → Decomposers/detritivores → their consumers
