Excessive or disturbing sound from traffic, industry, construction and loudspeakers constitutes noise pollution. Because radioactive materials remain hazardous for very long periods — some for thousands of years — improper handling or disposal can contaminate soil and water and cause radiation-induced illness, including cancers and genetic damage, in exposed organisms.
