Part (a)
Both statements describe processes used to build employee capability, but they differ in scope and time horizon.
(i) Training. This is the job-oriented process. Training is a process of increasing the knowledge and skills of an employee for doing a particular job. It attempts to improve their performance on the current job and prepares them for an intended (immediate next) job. The features are:
- It is job-oriented — it bridges the gap between the skill an employee has and the skill the job demands.
- It is short-term and results are expected quickly.
- It is specific and narrow — for example, a machine operator learning a new machine, or a salesperson learning about a new product.
(ii) Development. This is the career-oriented process. Development refers to the overall growth of the employee. It is a broader process that prepares an employee for future responsibilities by developing their conceptual, decision-making and leadership abilities. The features are:
- It is career-oriented — it prepares the employee for roles they may hold in future.
- It is long-term — the payoff unfolds over years.
- It is holistic — it develops the whole person, not just a single skill. …
