Telangana has lower overall poverty than India thanks to urban Hyderabad, but rural and tribal poverty is still significant. Poverty situation in Telangana

1. The overall poverty ratio is somewhat below the national average, largely because Hyderabad and the surrounding urban economy are prosperous.
2. However, rural, backward and tribal districts (such as the erstwhile Adilabad, Mahabubnagar and Khammam areas) show higher poverty, due to dependence on rain-fed agriculture, low incomes and seasonal migration.
3. Causes include unequal land distribution, low farm productivity, lack of non-farm jobs and indebtedness.

Unemployment situation in Telangana

1. Rural areas: mainly disguised and seasonal unemployment in agriculture.
2. Urban areas: open and educated unemployment, as the supply of educated youth exceeds suitable jobs outside the IT sector.
3. Growth has been services- and IT-led, which creates fewer jobs for the less-skilled, contributing to jobless growth.
