A plasmid is a self-replicating, circular extra-chromosomal DNA of bacteria; it is significant as a vector that carries foreign genes into host cells in genetic engineering.

What it is: A plasmid is an autonomously replicating, circular, double-stranded DNA molecule found in the cytoplasm of many bacteria, separate from the main bacterial chromosome.
