Nucleosomes are the basic packaging units of chromatin, each made of a histone octamer wrapped by DNA, connected in series like beads on a string.

In a eukaryotic nucleus, the very long DNA molecule is packaged with proteins to form chromatin. The fundamental repeating unit of this packaging is the nucleosome.

Structure: Each nucleosome consists of a core of eight histone protein molecules - a histone octamer, made of two molecules each of the four core histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. Approximately 200 base pairs of DNA are wrapped around this histone octamer (about 1.65 turns of DNA around the core, roughly 146 bp of DNA in tight contact with the octamer, plus a stretch of linker DNA connecting to the next nucleosome). A fifth histone, H1, sits on the linker DNA at the point where DNA enters/exits the nucleosome, helping to compact the structure further.
