Chromatin exists in two states based on packing density - heterochromatin (condensed, inactive) and euchromatin (loose, active) - and only euchromatin is transcribed.

Heterochromatin: Tightly/densely packed chromatin. It stains darkly with basic dyes (e.g., in Feulgen staining) because the DNA is condensed and less accessible.
