Glucose stores a large amount of energy in its C-C bonds. If all of this were released at once (as in combustion), it would appear as a sudden burst of heat and light that the cell could neither use nor survive. Respiration instead breaks glucose down through many small, enzyme-catalysed steps — glycolysis, the Krebs' cycle and the ETS.
Significance of the step-wise release
- Efficient energy capture: releasing energy in small packets at many points lets the cell trap much of it in the high-energy bonds of ATP rather than losing it as heat. The energy is stored in a usable currency (ATP).
- Prevents cell damage: a sudden release of all the energy would raise temperature sharply and harm the cell; gradual release keeps conditions safe and at cell/body temperature.
- Allows regulation and control: because the pathway proceeds step-by-step with many enzymes, its rate can be controlled by multiple means, and ATP can be produced as and when needed by the cell. …
